Saturday 1st September...Two defeats by Newton le Willows

Both the 1st and 2nd XI's played Newton le Willows.

The first teams played at Sefton Park, where the visitors won the toss and put Sefton in to bat on a damp wicket. They were soon in trouble and reached 36 for 4 but a fine stand of 77 between Robbie Houghton (50) and Paul Squires (33) raised hopes. They continued to loose wickets after this, however, and were dismissed for 146. In reply Newton le Willows reached the Sefton total for the loss of eight wickets. David Baird, Dave Poskitt and Robbie Houghton each took two wickets.

The 2nd XI's relegation problems increased with a defeat at Newton le Willows. They were put in to bat and dismissed for 63 with only Matty Pownall (19), Max Hill (17) and Dave Kirby (13) reaching double figures. Newton le Willows lost only one wicket reaching the total.

The 3rdXI had the one win of the day, away to Northern's fourth's. Sefton batted first and scored 144 with Rick Anderson making 54 and skipper James Pearce scoring 25. A fine bowling performance by Brian Viner, who took 8 for 50 in 17 overs, saw the home side dismissed for 110.

The 4thXI played Northern's thirds on the Lower Ground. Sefton were put in to bat and declared on 185 for 9 with Dave Walton (48), Jakob Surtees-Smith (40) and James Baird (29). In reply Northern lost 4 wickets, which were taken by Naj Ahmed (2 for 65) and Robin Surtees (2 for 54). Despite the defeat skipper Robin Surtees was pleased with the performance against the side who have won the league.

Sunday 2nd September ....Chester Cup Final abandoned

Rain ended the Chester Cup Final at Sefton Park. Leigh 2ndXI batted first and reached 177 for 5 in 37.3 overs when play was stopped. Best performer for Sefton seconds was NickeCockrell who took 4 for 56.

Saturday 8th September....Still chance of promotion despite defeat at Formby

Sefton won the toss at Formby, elected to bat, and went on to score 197 with Chris Bellis (53), John Jackson (42), Chris Wylie (30) and Matt Phythian (23) top scoring. In reply Formby reached 72 before they lost the first wicket and 157 when the second fell but, in the end, lost 7 wickets in reaching the required total. David Baird and Dave Poskitt who took two wickets.

Sefton Park are now in fifth place but still have a chance of promotion when they meet second placed Northop Hall next week.

The 2nd XI are still in relegation trouble following their defeat by "champions elect" Bootle. They batted first and reached 129 all out with Nick Cockrell making 62 and Peter Jones 23. In reply Bootle won by six wickets with Ted Williams taking 3 for 14.

A century by Matt Child (102) was the highlight of the 3rdXI's victory over the 4thXI. The thirds batted first and declared on 218 for 6. Nick Saunders scored 36 and Robin Surtees took 2 for 41.

In reply the fourths were dismissed 149 with Jakob Surtees-Smith (28), Nick Blackburn (22) and Robin Surtees (20). For the thirds, James Sayer took 3 for 40, Jon Sprosen 2-19 and Ian Kelly 2 for10.
