Saturday 7th June....Century and hat-trick for Vince Abel in FourthXI game.

The story of the day came from the fourth XI game on the Lower Ground and is described below.

The 1stXI travelled to Orrell Red Triangle where the home side won the toss and batted first, going on to score 214 for 6 declared in 55 overs. Robbie Houghton took 4 for 78. In reply Sefton produced a poor batting performance and were dismissed for 91 with John Jackson making the top score with 23.

Top of the table New Brighton were the 2ndXI's opponents at Sefton Park. Sefton won the toss and decided to bat. Iain Squires (56), Ian Seabury (39), Matty Phythian (29) and Scott Isaac (25) were Sefton's top scorers in their total of 199 all out. This was not enough, however, as New Brighton reached it with two overs to spare for the loss of 5 wickets.

The 4thXI played Liverpool thirds on the Lower Ground in a remarkable game. Liverpool won the toss and put Sefton in to bat. They opened with a stand of 187 between Vince Abel (100) and James Baird (64). Robin Surtees added 29 runs and they declared on 254 for 6 in 44 overs. Liverpool looked in a good position to win the game but lost their last 5 wickets in 9 balls without a run being scored, finishing with 211. These five wickets included a hat-trick for Vince Abel who finished with 5 for 61, an outstanding all round performance. Skipper Robin Surtees took 4 for 29.

The 5thXI travelled to Southport to play their 3rdXI. The home side batted first and declared on 163 for 5 in 45 overs. This turned out to be sufficient as Sefton were dismissed for 74 with Kevin Walton scoring 22. Skipper Jamie Bowman said that it was a very poor wicket and praised the performance of wicket keeper Adam Taylor who only conceded 3 byes in very difficult conditions.

Friday 6th June...Win in Echo KO

The 1stXI beat Parkfield Liscard in the Echo KO. Parkfield batted first and scored 88 for 9 in the 20 overs. David Baird took 3 for 9 and Robbie Houghton 3 for 15. In reply Sefton reached the required total in the 19th over for the loss of 8 wickets. Paul Squires top scored with 22 not out.

Sunday 8th June...Two cup victories

Rainford visited Sefton Park for the first round of the Business Assistance KO. Sefton batted first and scored 272 for 9 in the 45 overs. Good contributions came from Rob Hurley (24), Robbie Houghton (68), John Jackson (50) P Squires (20), Scott Isaac (30) and Phil Calrow (25) In reply Rainford were dismissed for 82 in the 27th over with Robbie Houghton, John Jackson and Peter Kelly taking two wickets apiece. They now play at Northern in the next round.

There was a similar story from the 3rdXI in their Embee Trophy second round tie against New Brighton. Batting first they were at one point 80 for 6 but skipper James Pearce (74) and Nick Saunders (50) put on over a hundred and the eventually reached 261 all out In reply New Brighton were dismissed for 80 with Robin Brown taking 4 wickets. They now visit Birchfield Park or Northern in the next round, not much luck with these draws!!
