Saturday 25th May...Remarkable start for Justin Greaves

Sefton Park welcomed Justin Greaves from Barbados on a sunny afternoon. The First XI result being the highlight of an otherwise disappointing day for Sefton Park teams.

The First XI welcomed Old Xaverians to Sefton Park and were asked to bat after the visitors won the toss. Wickets soon began to fall quickly as they were 7 for 2 and 55 for 5 after John Jackson was dismissed for 27. There then followed a stand of 123 between Paul Eastham who finished on 46 and Justin Greaves who scored an excellent 109 on his debut. Sefton declared on 230 for 9 in 54 overs. Old Xavs made steady progress and at 171 for 6 looked to be in a position to win the games but when Joe Roddis broke up the seventh wicket partnership that had scored 49, Sefton moved on to dismiss the visitors for 182 in the 43rd over. To add to Justin Greaves's batting performance, he took the first three Xav's wickets and finished with 4 for 32, Peter Kelly took 5 for 41.

The Second XI travelled to Bootle and decided to bat after winning the toss. They struggled to made a score and needed 42 from Ali Khan to enable them to reach 123 all out in 46.3 overs. Bootle reached the required total for the loss of 5 wickets in the 26th over. Ali Khan took the last two wickets for 3 runs.

The Third XI were away to Birkenhead Park Thirds. The home side won the toss and asked Sefton to bat first. Mike Heaney scored 95 and Adam Flynn 82 not out as Sefton declared on 223 for 3. This did not prove sufficient, however, as the home side went on to win by 7 wickets with 7 overs left.

Birkenhead Park's Fourths were the visitors on the Lower Ground, playing Sefton Park's Fourths. Sefton batted first and declared on 205 for 5 with Steve Squires scoring 49 and Joe Woodyatt 28 not out and James Pearce 40. In reply, Birkenhead Park finished on 172 for 7 in a drawn game Patrick Kendall finished with 3 for 21.

At the Liverpool College ground Sefton Park entertained Wavertree's Thirds. The visitors won the toss and decided to bat first, going on to declare on 251 for 6 in 40 overs. Harvey Shields finished with 3 for 64. Sefton were dismissed for 45 in reply, top scorer being David Sheppard with 12.

 

Monday 27th May...Win against Birkenhead St Mary's

The First XI played Birkenhead St Mary's in a top of the table battle at Sefton Park.

Sefton won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. After a delayed start for rain, Birkenhead St Mary's soon lost wickets, the first six to David Baird who finishes with 6 for 57. Peter Kelly took 3 for 18 as the visitors were dismissed for 112 in the 30th over. Sefton were never in trouble in their reply. Richard Forsyth (50 not out), who completed his half century on the last ball of the day, and skipper Adam Irwin (48 not out) led the home side to a 10 wicket victory.
