As the nation pauses to to pay tribute to its wartime heroes on the 80th anniversary of the victory in Europe, Sefton Park CC would also like to remember those members of the club who gave their lives during the Second World War.
A memorial plaque in the members bar pays tribute to both those who died in World War One and World War Two.
Seven members of the club died in World War Two and two names have recently been added to the list following extensive research by current member Peter Hall.
Lieutenant Colonel William Kingsley Arrowsmith OBE served with the Royal Artillery in WW2, in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and also Western Europe. He was awarded an MBE in 1945.
William was the husband of Marjorie Arrowsmith of Linnet Lane and the son of Rev William Arrowsmith, a well known Methodist minister in Liverpool, and Margaret Louisa Arrowsmith.
Born on June 2 1905, William was tragically killed in a motoring accident in Western Europe on August 10 1945 while on military service. As well as playing cricket for Sefton, William played rugby for West Derby-based Sefton Rugby Club.
Captain Thomas William Nathan (Jock) Lyon also served with the Royal Artillery in WW2.
Born in 1915, Jock was the husband of Joan Whinray Lyon and lived very locally to the club on Greenbank Road. He was the son of Tom and Ellen Lyon of Liverpool. He was killed in action on November 11 1943 during the Italian campaign and is buried at Cassino War Cemetery. He is also commemorated at St Ann’s churchyard in Rainhill.
