The Second travelled to play Newton le Willows in the first round of the Chester Cup

They were asked to bat first after the home team had won the toss.

Sefton were soon in trouble and at 29 for 5 were unsure of making a competitive total but skipper Dave Kelly made 46, Raj Bhardwaj 41 and Shadab Khan 24 to enable them to reach 166 in 43.3 overs.

Newton le Willows began well, putting on 55 for the first wicket but at 105 for 6, the game could have gone Sefton's way. A stand of 39 for the 7th wicket swung it back Newton's way before a valuable stand of 20 took them to within one run of the Sefton total with one wicket left. They achieved the necessary two runs for a one wicket victory..
